Here Are All the Latest Smartwatch Rumors Floating Around

Despite the fact that the market is saturated with dozens – if not hundreds – of different smartwatch models, there are still plenty of rumors pointing to more on the way. That said, several previously rumored devices have already been made available like “Google’s smartwatch,” which really turned out to be a wearable operating system based on Android. Apple’s long-rumored “iWatch” was also unveiled not too long ago, and it turns out the name is just the Apple Watch. Fitting, wouldn’t you say?

It is a little difficult to keep track of all the many rumored devices as opposed to the ones that actually exist now. In light of that, we’ve compiled a list of the smartwatches that are currently rumored to be on the way.

Here Are All the Latest Smartwatch Rumors

HTC “One” Smartwatch

HTC OneThere were tons of rumors pointing to an HTC smartwatch that would borrow design and style elements from their “One” handset lineup. We originally thought the device would be revealed at IFC 2014, but when nothing came we were forced to revisit our shaky beliefs. It turns out, HTC was getting ready to produce a smartwatch when they decided to scrap the project due to unknown “complications and difficulties.”

Considering nearly every handset manufacturer now has a smartwatch on the market – or on the way – it’s reasonable to expect HTC to follow suit. It will probably be a while before anything shows up on the radar. As far as what the device is going to include for features, or what it’s going to look like we have absolutely no idea – and neither does anyone else at this point. It’s also too early to say whether or not HTC will put together an Android Wear powered wearable, or use a proprietary OS. Judging by their current handset strategies, it’s more likely they’ll launch an Android Wear device.

For now, it’s a waiting game.

Microsoft Smartwatch

Microsoft Surface Watch ConceptNewsfeeds have been heating up quite a bit lately concerning the Microsoft smartwatch. According to various sources the watch will launch sometime within the next few weeks. The tech giant is purportedly trying to take on the greats, including Apple, Samsung and countless others.

All kinds of reports are coming out about the device but they all seem to point to a more fitness oriented wearable that will track various activities and data. It’s also being said that the watch will include a decent sized battery that should allow it to operate for two days or more on a full charge. While not a significant improvement over some of the currently available models – like the Moto 360 that lasts barely more than a day on a full charge – it’s still a step up so we’ll take it.

In addition, it will be interesting to see what kind of software or operating system Microsoft’s watch will be running on. There is word that it will work with Windows Phone, Android and iOS devices allowing anyone to take advantage of its features and functionality.

As with anything else on this list, we’ll know more as time passes.

LG WebOS Smartwatch

There have been several rumors pointing to an LG smartwatch running WebOS. You may remember, Palm originally created the operating system before going under and it was purchased by HP. More recently, LG purchased the rights to the software and began using it in their TV models.

The Verge reported that a developer website – hosted by none other than LG – offered information about a smartwatch running WebOS. The site was deactivated after The Verge made contact with LG to find out what was going on.

LG eventually made a statement on the matter, claiming that it was probably nothing.

“There are many initiatives going on at LG at any given moment. The majority of them never see the light of day.”

Since LG has the G Watch R on the way soon, which will be powered by Android Wear and not WebOS it’s probably going to be a while before we see anything more about this watch if there even is anything.

It would certainly be interesting to see how WebOS translates to a smaller wearable.

More Viable Smartwatch Rumors

Fitbit Surge ‘Fitness Superwatch’

Fitbit Surge marketing leakThis rumor is fairly new. Some marketing materials have been leaked that show a ‘fitness superwatch’ – a fancy way to say traditional smartwatch – is on the way from Fitbit. The rumors state that the new device will cost somewhere in the vicinity of $250.

Unlike their previous bands, the Surge – as it’s being called – will operate more like some of the other smartwatches on the market, and the fitness stuff is going to be an aside. Don’t worry though, it includes integrated GPS and can track a whole slew of activities and data, as you’d expect from a Fitbit device.

There’s no word on a release date or availability as of yet, but Fitbit is expected to make an announcement about the Surge within the next few weeks. They also have another device called the Fitbit Charge on the way, which is meant to replace the Force. The Force was pulled from the market after several users reported skin irritation from wearing it.

Will.i.am Smartwatch, the Puls

Will.i.am unveiled his self-funded and self-created smartwatch a while ago, and it looks like it’s going to be available pretty soon. Unfortunately, there’s still nothing on a firm release date or price. The same kind of mystery cloud hangs over what it’s actually going to offer for features and functionality. We do know a few things it will be able to do like play music or DJ, answer and make calls and access social media networks. Other than that, the features are kind of up in the air.

It’s been dubbed the Puls, which is a much better name than just the “Will.i.am smartwatch,” at least we think so anyway. It will be a standalone device, allowing users to plug-in a SIM card for mobile network access.

For hardware, the Puls is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip with 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, 3G, WiFi, and Bluetooth connectivity, a pedometer, and accelerometer.

Will.i.am pretentiously said, “this is not a watch, by any means. Watches don’t have SIM cards. This is a new type of communication.”

To be honest, it doesn’t seem any different than some of the other standalone devices already available, but we’ll see. As you can tell from the video it’s going to be more akin to fitness bands, since it uses the cuff and bracelet style heavily.

More Smartwatch Rumors Will Be Coming

That’s it for the big rumors at this point in time, but you can bet that there will eventually be more on the way as manufacturers join the smartwatch game. Eventually, when these smartwatches launch we’ll amend this article to include the necessary information and links.

Are you excited for any of the devices on this list? Are you planning to purchase any of them, or are you going to avoid them completely.

We’re still curious who’s going to be the big name in the business. The smartwatch market is still pretty open in terms of who will become the dominant force. Will Apple be able to change the game and take over, or will it be someone else? What do you think?
