A Wearable Thanksgiving: How You Can Use Your Smartwatch Over the Holiday

With Thanksgiving just a day away we’re ready to spend some time with family, friends and lots of great food. Of course, the holiday isn’t just about stuffing our faces it’s about giving thanks and appreciating what we’ve been given – whether that be turkey, ham or just a good ol’ red meat cheeseburger.

So today, to give back we decided to put together an entertainment filled post. Instead of our usual wearable FAQ, review or feature post we’re going to have a little fun. Before we begin, keep in mind that this is not meant to be a literal post. In other words, what you read here should not necessarily be taken seriously.

If you can’t handle a bit of fun, comedic prose and lots of great food well then, go do something else. No seriously, you probably don’t want to read this junk anyway.

Forget your tablets, game consoles, TVs and various other electronics. This is about the wearable market, those beloved smartwatches and fitness devices you have sitting at home or on your wrist this very moment.

Since wearables are so diverse, we decided to compile a list of ways you can use them this holiday season. If you’re even remotely considering the idea of purchasing one, at least you’ll know how to get some use out of it. As an added bonus, if you’re in the market for a wearable, check out our list of the best Black Friday smartwatch deals.

Moving on, let’s take a look at some of the most interesting ways you can use a wearable this holiday season.

Play Some Christmas Carols or Holiday Music

Android Wear PairedLike it or not, Christmas is right around the corner. In your neighborhood people may already be putting their lights up, or setting up Christmas trees. That also means that Christmas carols and music will soon be blaring all over the radio. Before it gets old — and that happens pretty quick usually — you can take advantage of the moment to enjoy some music yourself.

While your visiting with family and friends, why not play some Christmas music or carols for everyone? If you really want to have some fun, encourage everyone to sing along to the most renowned songs. There’s nothing like a family melody session as everyone blurts out the words to one of the many versions of “Let it Snow.”

If you’re not using your smartwatch to play some Christmas music — whether that be for others or just yourself — then you’re missing out bigtime.

Enjoy a Great Holiday Flick, Like Die Hard

Ho Ho Ho Die HardTaking media playback a step further, you can also watch movies and videos on some smartwatches – read some, not all. If you have a device capable of doing so, why not waste away the monotony of family get-togethers watching a great holiday themed flick, like Die Hard. The way Bruce Willis actentuates his “ho-ho-ho’s” is fantastic.

You could also play Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer for the little ones, or if you want to snuggle with someone special Jack Frost (the bloody R-rated one). Of course, you could always just use your smartphone or tablet to do the same thing, but where’s the fun in that?

Most Wearables Have a Built-in Egg Timer

Okay, so the timer mechanic wasn’t exactly designed to be used like an egg timer but that’s okay, it works great. Instead of waiting for your oven or a physical timer to sound an alarm that your food is done — or looking at the turkey thermometer — why not use the timer on your wearable device or smartwatch? After all, that’s what you bought it for, isn’t it?

Besides, it will give you a reason to look at the time on your wrist instead of pulling your phone out of your pocket – like totally guys, that’s so last year anyway.

Share the Wealth

Chances are, quite a few people in your family will have absolutely no idea what the hell a smartwatch is. You can use the device as a conversation piece to show them why they might want something similar for themselves. Of course, then grandma just has another reason to call you every week when her new gadget goes bad.

Forget Movies and Music, Go Straight for the Games

Doom on Samsung Gear LiveOkay, so not all smartwatches have games pre-loaded or even available to download but that’s okay. You can always turn to something like the VTECH Kidizoom which has a few available. You might remember, however that devices like the original Samsung Gear can play full Android games like Candy Crush. We’ve also seen examples of Doom and Minecraft running on a wearable, which is downright badass.

Forget listening to your uncle drone on about how his year’s been, or your mom complaining about her family that never gets in touch – pick up your smartwatch and get to gaming.

Use it to Disconnect

Arguably, one of the best ways you can use your smartwatch or wearable device this holiday season is to disconnect from the world. No, you’re not exactly going off the grid since you will still receive notifications, messages and alerts on your wrist – unless you disable them. That said, you can take a break from looking at your phone display to see who texted, called or emailed. In fact, you can flat out enjoy your holiday and vacation, and let your device do all the talking. With the proper applications and functions, you can set your device to alert you only when an important message, email or call comes through. In that respect, you can ignore any and all messages about work. Who wants to worry about those damn TPS reports this weekend anyway?

The Moment Smartwatch wornLook Better Than Your Siblings

Worried that you’re siblings always look better than you during the holidays? Don’t worry, with that bulky, high-tech device strapped to your wrist you’ll look like a badass – just ask Dick Tracy. It will look even better when you start receiving tons of alerts and messages, and no one wants to talk to your siblings. You’ll look more popular and who doesn’t want that?

If you’re not worried about looking better than your siblings, the watch even doubles as a fashion accessory – it should blend in well with that outfit you have picked out.

Remotely Wish Your Family Happy Holidays

Don’t want to stop what your doing while making those mashed potatoes, gravy or salad? You can also use the smartwatch to remotely call family and wish them a happy holiday. Adversely, if they call you then you can answer your phone without even picking it up. In fact, you can leave your phone in your pocket during the whole conversation.

It also works great if you’re stuck at work and want to wish someone special a happy holiday too.

That’s Not All!

Isn’t it amazing what you can do with your smartwatch or wearable device? That’s not all though, this list is not comprehensive! There’s so much more you can do this holiday season if you have a smartwatch strapped to your wrist.

You can video chat, send your GPS location, track your family’s physical activity, keep track of your children’s location, communicate with others and much more. What will you be using your wearable device for this holiday season?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone from the team at Smartwatches.org!
